          Information about Holiday or Ceremony

          Siwaratri

Where did this ceremony take place:

          In English

Sivaratri means ‘night of Siva’. This holiday falls once a year in January, a day before new moon’s day of month Kapitu. If a Hindu mentions ‘a day’, it always means from sunrise until the next sunrise. It is quite different from modern day calculation which starts at midnight.

At the night of Sivaratri, Lord Siva does deep meditation, called samadhi. The Balinese stay awake in the entire night to pray and meditate. It is advised that people contemplate their mind in order to control it over good and bad.

Commonly, the Balinese pray on Sivaratri day at Pura Dalem temple, for it is a holy place for Lord Siva according to Balinese Hindu tradition. Other than Pura Dalem, some other people stay up at school’s temple, Jagatnatha temples or any other big temples in Bali and Indonesia. Sivaratri is not only celebrated in Bali, but also by the Hindus throughout the globe.

          In Indonesian

Sivaratri berarti ‘malam Siva’.
