      Information about Holiday or Ceremony

      Piodalan Ratu Kokokan
      Kokokan baliwiki.jpg

Where did this ceremony take place:

      In English

If you go to Kintamani from Ubud, you will pass through Petulu Village, a cool village with a view of the rice fields. It is located right on the border between Pengosekan and Tegallalang. In this village, once you enter the rice fields, you are not the most dominant species. You are entering a kingdom of kokokan (white stork - Bubulcus ibis).

Kokokan birds have been part of the Petulu community since 1965, the first year when several kokokan birds came to the village and decided to stay. Many residents experienced strange events when trying to kill or drive away the birds. According to the priests’ account, the birds belong to the gods assigned to eat pests and plant diseases.

Since then, the Petulu people have accepted these white-feathered friends as part of their lives. There are more than 20,000 kokokan (stork) birds in Petulu based on a 2008 survey. Now the number is likely to increase after tighter conservation. If you see a crowd of kokokan birds in the fields around Badung or Denpasar, they are probably beaked residents of the village of Petulu that happen to be looking for food.

Piodalan Ratu Kokokan is performed every Tumpek Uye day (see entry "Tumpek Uye") at a special shrine known as “Palinggih Ratu Kokokan”. Local people believe that the birds are gifts from God so that their harvest is always abundant.
