    Information about Holiday or Ceremony

    Ngaga di Pedawa
    Gaga BASABali Wiki 2.jpg

Where did this ceremony take place:

    In English

Ngaga comes from the word 'gaga' which means rice grown on dry land. In the past, the people of Pedawa Village planted gaga rice as a staple food. This rice used to be harvested twice a year. Then, as new types of rice species were developed, the existence of this dry land paddy was slowly abandoned since the 1970s. Now, most people have switched to planting hybrid rice, which can be harvested three or four times a year.

In fact, the Pedawa people have an ancient tradition that is closely related to gaga rice. In every ceremony at the Puncak Sari Temple, they always use grains that come from gaga rice. These sacred seeds are known as "bijaratus". Because in their village there are no more people who plant gaga rice, the implementation of this sacred ceremony has experienced some hindrance. To fulfill the "bijaratus" grains, they get gaga rice seeds from various other regions, even importing them.

In order for this ceremony to continue and the characteristics of the Pedawa community also remain, starting in 2016, Gaga rice was replanted in Pedawa. This gaga rice planting ceremony is known as “Ngaga”, and is part of a sacred ceremony to honor Goddess Sri, the goddess of rice. In the Ngaga tradition, people plant gaga rice on one hectare of village land. This Ngaga ceremony had been stopped for about four decades. Luckily, the government paid attention to this and provided support for the preservation of ancient traditions in Buleleng.
