          Magepokan ring Sembiran

Where did this ceremony take place:

          In English

Magepokan ceremony is a unique tradition native to Sembiran village, Tejakula District, Buleleng Regency, Bali. Sembiran village, together with several villages along the hilly slopes of north Bali, are old villages known as Bali Mula or Bali Aga villages. These villages are called Bali Aga villages because their culture has existed before the expansion of Majapahit in 1343 AD.

This ceremony is held at dusk, on the full moon day of Kalima month (around November-December) at the time of “piodalan” at Pura Puseh. At that time, residents gather in front of Puseh Temple carrying bamboo sticks, the ends of which were decorated with coconut leaves. The residents are then divided into two: those who are married and those who are not married.

The residents then walk around the village. After that, they again gather at the frontgate of Puseh Temple to carry out a "war" using bamboo sticks. After this procession is completed, the residents perform a “Gandrung Dance”, a folk entertainment performance in the form of a traditional “joged bumbung” dance whose participants are males.

The meaning of this ceremony, according to the traditional belief of the Sembiran people, is to expell misfortunes and dangers. The month of Kalima is believed to be the beginning of unfortunate sasih (months). Many ceremonies against evil reinforcements are carried out from the month of Kalima to Kasanga (the ninth month).
