Biography

Citra Sasmita, whose full name is Ni Putu Citra Sasmita, was born in Tabanan, Bali, March 30, 1990. Her name has become known in Indonesian fine arts through her paintings, installation art and performance art which have been exhibited at home and abroad. Citra is one of the recipients of the Gold Award Winner in the 2017 UOB Painting of The Year painting competition for the professional artist category. Citra's works often represent women's issues, especially regarding cultural identity, the position of women in patriarchal culture and social and cultural realities.

Citra grew up in a family of traditional performing artists who often performed from village to village in Hindu ritual ceremonies in Bali. That's when she became interested in the world of art. Citra studied at the Faculty of Letters, Udayana University (2008) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Ganesha Education University (2009), because her desire to continue her painting studies was not approved by her late father, who was then a Chemistry teacher.

However, her dream as an artist grew again when she joined a campus theater group and became a short story illustrator in the Bali Post daily. It was when she became a short story illustrator that she began to explore the world of art on a self-taught and actively participates in exhibitions in Bali and outside Bali. The two fields of science (literature and science) that she has studied have guided her work in formulating ideas and social issues.

In 2016, her work which was exhibited at the exhibition "Bali Art Intervention #1" was highlighted because it presented a female figure kissing a pig's head, presenting images of Balinese women's cultural life under psychological and social pressure, as the title of the exhibition presented critical works. about the dark side of the island of Bali. Then in 2016 in the exhibition “Merayakan Murni”, an exhibition dedicated to the painter Murniasih (1966-2006), Citra presented an installation of 100 pieces of ceramics combined with the hanging scales “Mea Vulva, Maxima Vulva” which represents the inequality of social class and people's habits. Some of her works have also been exhibited in Melbourne in an exhibition entitled Crossing Beyond Baliseering.

Citra Sasmita bernama lengkap Ni Putu Citra Sasmita, lahir di Tabanan, Bali, 30 Maret 1990. Namanya mulai dikenal dalam seni rupa Indonesia melalui karya-karyanya yang tidak hanya berupa lukisan, seni instalasi dan performance art dan telah dipamerkan di dalam dan di luar negeri. Citra merupakan salah satu penerima penghargaan Gold Award Winner dalam kompetisi seni lukis UOB Painting of The Year 2017 kategori seniman professional. Karya-karya Citra banyak merepresentasikan isu-isu perempuan terutama mengenai identitas kultural, posisi perempuan dalam kultur patriarki dan realitas sosial dan budaya.

Citra tumbuh dalam keluarga seniman pertunjukan tradisi yang sering pentas dari desa ke desa dalam upacara ritual Hindu di Bali. Bermula dari itulah ia tertarik dengan dunia kesenian. Citra sempat kuliah di Fakultas Sastra Universitas Udayana (2008) dan Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (2009), karena keinginannya untuk melanjutkan studi lukis tidak direstui oleh almarhum ayahnya yang saat itu menjadi guru Kimia.

Namun cita-citanya sebagai perupa kembali tumbuh ketika ia mengikuti grup teater kampus dan menjadi ilustrator cerpen di harian Bali Post. Ketika ia menjadi ilustrator cerpen inilah ia mulai mendalami dunia seni rupa secara otodidak dan aktif mengikuti pameran di Bali dan diluar Bali. Dua bidang ilmu (sastra dan sains) yang pernah ia pelajari juga menjadi pedoman dalam proses karyanya dalam memformulasikan gagasan dan isu-isu sosial.

Pada tahun 2016, karyanya yang dipamerkan pada pameran "Bali Art Intervention #1" mendapat sorotan karena menghadirkan figur perempuan yang mencium kepala babi, menghadirkan imaji kehidupan kultural perempuan Bali dalam tekanan psikologis dan sosial, sebagaimana tajuk dari pameran tersebut yang menghadirkan karya-karya kritis mengenai sisi gelap pulau Bali. Kemudian pada tahun 2016 dalam pameran “Merayakan Murni”, sebuah pameran persembahan untuk pelukis Murniasih (1966-2006), Citra menghadirkan karya instalasi 100 buah keramik yang dikombinasikan dengan timbangan gantung "Mea Vulva, Maxima Vulva" yang merepresentasikan ketimpangan kelas sosial dan habitus masyarakat. Beberapa karyanya juga pernah dipamerkan di Melbourne dalam pameran bertajuk Crossing Beyond Baliseering.
