        [ID] After cremation ceremony (ngaben), it is commonly proceeded to Nyekah or Nyekar. Nyekah is a symbolistic ritual to pay homage to the deceased member of the family. Funerals in Balinese tradition is a string of complex rituals, but actually the core meaning is a process of soul evolution from the day of death up to the eleventh day when he departs for Yamaloka (the realm of judgment). This evolutionary process is described in details in Vedic Sacred Book Garuda Purana, and adapted in Lontar Putru Saji Tarpana and Yama Purana Tattwa. Nyekah means a hope that the departing soul will attain good place. As is traditioned, food and water are offered because the departing soul must obtain new material body so that (s)he can enter the next stage of evolutionary process. As long as one is tied by sins and merits, the soul will change its bodies again and again. Therefore, death means to change gross body. In order to continue its journey to the afterlife (to Pitraloka, the realm of the ancestors where one will be judged according to one’s past deeds on Earth), one must accept new gross body made of watery element. That is why along postfuneral ceremonies, water is a compulsory ingredient of the offerings to function as an element to form new body for the departing soul.

Mangda sang atma mrasidayang ngalanturang lampah ipun ring gumi pitra genah sang pitara irika ipun nerima danda utawi phala parilaksanan ipun di gumine , ipun musti nerima angga sarira sane anyar sane malakar aji dhatu toya.         [ID] Setelah upacara kremasi (ngaben), biasanya dilanjutkan dengan upacara Nyekah atau Nyekar. Nyekah adalah sebuah upacara simbolis untuk menghormati arwah sanak keluarga yang telah meninggal. Upacara kematian dalam tradisi Bali adalah sebuah rentetan upacara yang kompleks, namun sesungguhnya inti upacara ini adalah proses evolusi roh dari hari meninggal hingga hari keberangkatannya menuju Yamaloka (pengadilan) di hari kesebelas. Proses ini dijelaskan dengan detail dalam Kitab Suci Weda Garuda Purana, dan disadur dalam Lontar Putru Saji Tarpana dan Yama Purana Tattwa. Nyekah berarti sebuah harapan bahwa roh yang meninggal akan mendapatkan tempat yang layak. Sesuai tradisi, makanan dan air dipersembahkan sebab roh orang yang meninggal harus mendapatkan badan material agar bisa masuk ke tahap evolusi selanjutnya. Selama ia masih terikat oleh dosa dan pahala, roh mengganti badannya berkali-kali. Karena itu, kematian berarti proses mengganti badan kasar. Agar roh dapat meneruskan perjalanannya ke alam pitra (alam para leluhur di mana dia menerima semua akibat perbuatannya di Bumi), dia harus menerima badan baru yang terbuat dari unsur air. Itulah sebabnya di sepanjang prosesi upacara pascakematian, air wajib dipersembahkan untuk membentuk badan baru.
