Nebes means removing the pratima masks (of statues or sacred objects) to be renewed. This renewal procession is known as Ngodakin (see entry “Ngodakin”). So, the Nebas procession can be called the initial procession before the sacred masks are repaired by an undagi (craftsman) who usually has been spiritually initiated.

Each village in Bali usually has some pratima, or sacred objects. These pratimas can take the form of masks, barong, rangda and so on. Every few years, these pratimas have to be repaired, repainted, or replaced with new ones. The Nebes procession is carried out when the Pratima mask is taken down from its place in the temple and removed for service.

Usually, these sacred masks are repaired by experts called undagi. This pratima repair is usually carried out in the temple itself, but some are doing it at the undagi's house. After the pratima have been repaired, a ceremony called Ngereh (see entry “Ngereh”) is performed. Ngereh is the last procession in a series of Ngodakin ceremonies, which is usually followed by a Tawur, Ngenteg Linggih or even Usaba ceremony at a local temple.

There is no special day when this ceremony is performed. However, usually good days such as full moon’s day, kajeng kliwon, new moon’s day or tumpek are chosen as the first day of work and repair of the pratima.

Ngereh nggih punika upacara panguntat ring dudonan upacara Ngodakin sane biasane kalanturang antuk upacara tawur, ngenteg linggih, tur kadirasa usaba ring pura punika.

Nenten wenten rahina kusus ngamargiang upacara puniki. Nanging sakadi sane lumrah, rahina becik minakadi purnama, kajeng kliwon, tilem utawi tumpek kapilih pinaka rahina pangawit karya Ngodakin utawi Nebas punika.

Nebes berarti melepas topeng pratima (arca atau benda-benda yang dikeramatkan) untuk diperbaharui. Prosesi pembaharuan ini dikenal dengan nama ngodakin (lihat entri “Ngodakin”). Jadi, prosesi nebas bisa disebut sebagai prosesi awal sebelum topeng sakral diperbaiki oleh seorang undagi yang biasanya telah diupacarai terlebih dahulu.

Masing-masing desa di Bali biasanya memiliki pratima, atau benda keramat yang disucikan. Pratima-pratima ini bisa berupa topeng, barong, rangda dan sebagainya. Beberapa tahun sekali, pratima-pratima ini harus diperbaiki, dicat ulang, atau diganti dengan yang baru. Prosesi nebes dilakukan pada saat topeng pratima ini diturunkan dari tempatnya di pura dan dilepas untuk kemudian diservis.

Biasanya, topeng-topeng sakral ini diperbaiki oleh para ahlinya yang disebut undagi. Perbaikan pratima ini biasanya dilangsungkan di pura itu sendiri, namun ada pula yang mengerjakannya di rumah sang undagi.
