      Information about Holiday or Ceremony

      Matimpugan

Where did this ceremony take place:

      In English

[EN] Matimpugan tradition is held every year in Tenganan Pegringsingan village and is a part of rites of passage for dahas (girls) and terunas (boys) to enter adulthood. The boys and girls are firstly declared that they are physically ready (they have entered puberty), and they should follow the rules determined by the senior villagers. During the ritual, six girls sit on a ‘bale’ (a traditional building made usually of woods) with their backs facing the boys. The girls are not allowed to bring any items except a gringsing cloth measuring 2 x 2 meters for head and back covers. Then, when the judge sets that the game is ready, the boys throw mud to the back of the girls. This mud is a mixture of rotten jackfruits, mud and cow (sometimes bufallow) dung. In Vedic tradition, cow dung is considered sacred and becomes main ingredients for purificatory rituals (called prayascitta). There are five sacred items produced by cows, namely milk, curd, clarified butter, urine and dung. When those five ingredients are mixed, they are called panca-gavya and are used to purify things and places from any impurities.
