        Macaru

        Caru means 'beautiful', and macaru means a ceremony aimed at spirits who are inferior to humans so as not to damage human life. In ancient times, caru meant offering rice cakes, clarified butter, milk and yogurt to God, the demigods and ancestors. Then, the rest of the offerings are then offered to the ghosts and bhuta kala (spirits) because their levels are lower than humans. The remnants of the offerings to God are given to Bhuta Kala (spirits) so that they can get purification.

        As a result of the inclusion of the influence of Tantra Bhairawa in the eleventh century AD, caru then changed into animal meat and blood offerings. From then on, there was known a ritual called ‘tabuh rah’ (blood sprinkling), where animal blood (usually black, white and tawny chickens) was sprinkled at the ceremony. This is Bhairawic practice. The ‘tabuh rah’ ritual is derived from the sprinkling of the five gawyas (five holy elements) from Vedic tradition.

        Then, caru becomes the one we see now. Therefore, Caru also experienced evolution and various developments in accordance with the underlying philosophical understanding. If the foundation is Bhairawic philosophy, then caru is made with animal blood and flesh. If this caru uses the system according to its original tradition, then caru is actually a food offering from seeds and milk to God, the demigods and ancestors. Therefore, the offerings in the way actually differ from one era to another, depending on which philosophical understanding one adheres to. That is the uniqueness of Hinduism.

        Duaning ajah-ajahan Tantra Bhairawa ngeranjing ring Bali duk satawarsa solas masehi, caru laut magentos dados atur-aturan ulam lan getih sato, utamannyane ayam selem, brumbun lan putih, tur kaketisang ring genah upacara. Niki sampun praktik Bhairawa wastane. Tradisi tabuh rah puniki mawit saking tradisi ngetisang panca gawya lalima elemen suci .

        Sampun kenten, akulturasi punika dados caru sakadi mangkin. Nika mawinan, caru manten mauwah tur magentos manut tattwa sane ngadasarin kawentenannyane. Yening tattwa Bhairawa pinaka dasar, caru kakaryanang antuk lelakaran rah lan ulam sato. Yening caru puniki nganggen sistem manut sakadi witnyane, caru sujatine inggih punika atur-aturan ajeng-ajengan wiji-wijian lan susu majeng ring Hyang Widhi, para dewatane tur para pitarane. Nika mawinan, sesajian ring caru sujatine matiosan manut jaman, manut saking tattwa sane cen sane kagambel. Nika sampun makrana Hindu unik.

        Caru berarti ‘indah’, dan macaru berarti sebuah upacara yng ditujukan kepada roh-roh yang lebih rendah daripada manusia agar tidak merusak kehidupan manusia. Pada zaman dahulu, caru bermakna persembahan kue beras, mentega cair, susu dan yogurt kepada Tuhan, para dewa dan leluhur. Kemudian, sisa persembahan itu barulah dipersembahkan kepada para hantu dan bhuta kala (roh-roh halus) sebab tingkatan mereka lebih rendah daripada manusia. Sisa persembahan kepada Tuhan diberikan kepada bhuta kala (roh halus) agar mereka mendapatkan penyucian.

        Akibat masuknya pengaruh Tantra Bhairawa pada abad kesebelas Masehi, caru kemudian berganti menjadi persembahan daging dan darah hewan. Mulai saat itu, dikenal adanya tabuh rah, di mana darah binatang (biasanya ayam hitam, cokelat dan putih) dipercikkan di tempat upacara. Ini adalah praktik Bhairawa. Tradisi tabuh rah ini berasal dari pemercikkan panca gawya (lima elemen suci).

        Kemudian, jadilah caru seperti sekarang ini. Oleh karena itu, caru pun mengalami evolusi dan berbagai perkembangan sesuai dengan paham filsafat yang melandasinya. Apabila yang melandasinya adalah filsafat Bhairawa, maka caru dibuat dengan persembahan darah dan daging binatang. Apabila caru ini memakai sistem sesuai makna aslinya, maka caru sesungguhnya adalah persembahan makanan dari biji-bijian dan susu kepada Tuhan, para dewa dan leluhur. Karena itu, sesajian dalam caru sesungguhnya berbeda dari satu zaman ke zaman lainnya, tergantung paham filsafat mana yang dianut seseorang. Itulah keunikan Hindu.
