      Information about Holiday or Ceremony

      Mesbes Bangke
      Bangke BASAbali Wiki.jpg

Where did this ceremony take place:

      In English

Mesbes bangke, or tearing up corpses, may sound extreme to some. However, for the people of Banjar Buruan, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, tearing a corpse is something that must be done if someone dies in their banjar area.

According to olden tales, this tradition began because corpses in ancient times often smelled bad because there was no formaldehyde or other preservatives. In order for this bad odor to be forgotten, the residents finally tore up the corpse.

For the outside community, this extreme treatment of corpses is considered inhuman, especially for people who die and their families. However, the people of Banjar Buruan do it with great joy.

In carrying out this tradition, only the native people of Banjar Buruan are allowed to do so. When outsiders participate, bad things will happen.
