Definitions
- (Labiatae) en
- holy basil, sacred basil, sweet basil. It is called sacred basil in some parts of India, and sections of the stem are used as beads in that country. The leaves are somewhat milder in aroma than those of kecarum. They may be used as a vegetable or as a spice. The pleasant smell of this plant probably gave it its religious position in India. The origin of the word basil is the same as that of basilica, - coming from the Greek word for king, basilikos. en
