Description
Research is being conducted with the Bali State Polytechnic and a program implemented to conserve groundwater in Bali by investigating 3 possible solutions: Well Adoption, River Adoption and Water Adoption.
Why does the innovation or project matter?
Water is a basic requirement for living things, however the groundwater throughout Bali is currently in poor condition. In some areas in Bali there has been excessive exploitation of water and certain coastal areas have experienced intrusion of sea water to the land. Population growth has also added to the burden on water usage in Bali. Further, an increase in business and industrial activities has brought about levels of water usage that are unsustainable. If this situation is allowed to continue and a solution not found, Bali will face serious water supply problems and will not be able to meet the demand for water. Through this current initiative, efforts are being made to conserve water by implementing several possible solutions to the problem. Also, joint research with the Bali State Polytechnic will be undertaken to ascertain the current state of water resources in Bali.
How do you or your team know that the innovation or project is working (or making a positive contribution)?
Implementation of the Well Adoption program with the construction of recharge wells at several points and the implementation of River Adoption and Water Adoption activities.
What has contributed to the innovation or project working?
This project will provide an overview of the current state of groundwater use in Bali as well as deliver education and promote an understanding of how to protect the water resources of Bali.
What else would help the innovation or project be more successful?
A raised awareness of all parties, whether stakeholders or the community, towards conserving water, either by regulating usage or by making recharge areas so that groundwater sources can be maintained.
Is the innovation or project self-sustaining? If not, what needs to be done for that to happen?
Yes it can by implementing the 3 programs mentioned above and raising awareness about how to undertake the protection of water resources.
What Balinese value does this initiative invoke?
The Balinese value of wisdom involved in this project is one aspect of Tri Hita Karana, namely, Palemahan by striving to preserve the environment, especially water. In addition, efforts to conserve water will preserve the continuity of the subak irrigation system. Religious activities in Bali, namely Hindu activities, will also be supported as water is an important aspect in carrying out Balinese Hindu ceremonies, both small scale and large scale. Balinese Hinduism is known as the Water (Tirtha) Religion.
