  • the common yam, a vine that grows out of a large bunch of bulbous, hairy tubers. Leaves are trifoliate leaflets are oblong, with pointed free ends, up to 30 cm. long. The tubers contain a poison that must be washed out before using. Tubers grow just under the ground in a mass of about 8 or 10 individuals, each up to about 4 cm. in diameter, irregular in shape, and covered with root hairs. The entire plant is quite poisonous and has to be chopped and washed very thoroughly and dried in the sun before eating. It is a common food, usually eaten as a snack, with grated coconut and a little sugar and salt. It is thought to taste better in this form than ubi kayu.
