Water, Tourism, and Social Change: A Discussion of Environmental Perceptions in Bali + (Water plays an important role in Balinese … Water plays an important role in Balinese society. Not only is it commonly featured in Balinese Hindu rituals, but its use and management also enables prosperity through rice cultivation. While these aspects of water have been discussed in many academic and non-academic publications, qualitative understandings of relations to seawater remain somewhat unexplored in the literature. The aim of this paper is to present a preliminary review of existing literature on water and marine environments in Bali, and argue the need for further qualitative social scientific understanding of contemporary Balinese relations to seawater. A discussion of existing research on ocean-centred communities and continued tourism development in Bali’s coastal areas is intended to add to current research in Balinese studies. By presenting literature on Balinese concepts of environment, water and the ocean, this paper seeks to highlight the benefits of continued research on perceptions of environment to discussions of pollution, water scarcity and resource management. Although maritime attractions such as the temples at Tanah Lot and Uluwatu as well as several popular beach communities play a significant role in the tourism industry, this paper suggests the need to further investigate the importance of these attractions to tourists and Balinese as well as the social interpretations associated with them.cial interpretations associated with them.)

We can study unique ideas from this Wikithon that concern reusing or recycling materials, introducing eco-friendly coloring techniques, or new approaches to durable fashion designs. Its relevance is very notable since tourism and fashion industries have created significant drawbacks to the island’s environment. We hope to find the best solutions to reduce the negative impacts. One of the ideas relevant to the future of Bali is to strengthen cooperation among local designers and traditional artists’ communities to increase traditional skills and local economy. In this Wikithon, I would like to put emphasis on our awareness towards the significance of buying sustainable fashion products and supporting local eco-friendly brands. I also hope to create innovative production ideas for less-trash fashion products and renewable energy uses. Bali’s uniqueness in culture and arts can be an inspiration for unique fashion designs and motives related to the island’s identity. In the scope of idea uniqueness, perhaps we can combine digital technology such as blockchain to be able to manage the supply chain and to prove the sustainability of Balinese fashion. Bali gives everyone the opportunity to explore the outdoors (either in the mountains or underwater), and this gives everyone the chance to gain a new skill, make new friends or develop a love for the natural world. Recently, I have gotten the courage and determination to say yes to become a certified Open Water Diver.This experience has been incredibly rewarding, as I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, my friendships grew with those I trained with and my eyes were opened to the beauty of the underwater world. With this opportunity, I realised how pressing the issues of coral bleaching and unsustainable fishing actually are and am now more determined to be a part of the solution. From this, I will join a coral restoration project in Les Village because no matter how small we contribute, every action makes a difference. We must think about the global implications yet, take action locally.The Balinese open up their island to all of us, foreigners and Indonesians so we can experience the island’s beauty and it is crucial for us to not take this for granted. I realise that a society which hugely depends on tourism has a risk, therefore respecting the customs and traditions in Bali should be a no brainer, as we would hope and expect the same of others if they are visiting our home. As of 25th March 2023, 76 foreigners have been deported fromBali for reasons that range from overstaying visas to committing crimes. Although this is a small percentage compared to the number of tourists, in this digital era, their actions go viral and can harm the image of Bali. While Bali is well-known for its tourism because of its beauty, kindness and approachability, I believe that rules should be enforced in order to maintain the quality of tourism that this island offers.Moreover, during my time here I’ve come to realise that it’s important to diversify and not put all our eggs in the same basket. During the pandemic, tourism was at a standstill which hit the people and local economy dramatically. Therefore, the Balinese have adapted to diversify their work portfolio such as farming, establishing small businesses or fishing. However, subaks now face some problems due to low farmers’ income from paddy farming. This paper describes the social capital performance of the subak system and attempts to identify ways to strengthen the social capital for agricultural development. The study selected the subak of Guama as its site because the government implemented a pilot project on agribusiness development in this subak in 2002. Key informants and samples were drawn during the survey and observation for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive methods. Results showed that social capital within the subak system consisted of mutual trust, social norms,and social networking. The three elements run simultaneously for the agricultural, irrigation, andagribusiness activities, including ritual ceremonies within the subak system. The samples consisted of 34 elderly were selected by purposive sampling, divided into 17 elderly in treatment group and 17 elderly in control group, and data collection was done using the Stress Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ). Result: Test analysis result of Independent Sample T-Test with a significance level of 95% was concluded there are significant effect of reminiscence therapy to stress in the elderly. Practically, this research can provide an understanding of policy implementers to pay attention to aspects of implementation in tour guide licensing policies in Bali. Then academically, this research can be a reference for tourism policy research related to implementation theory. A qualitative approach with the case-study analysis applied to this study. The research conducted semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation studies to gain insights from research data.
