Bali Tourism: Prosperous, but at What Cost?

Tourism is a significant part of Bali’s economy, making it a top travel destination. However, challenges like overtourism are becoming apparent. Fodor’s Travel even recommended avoiding Bali in 2025 due to overcrowding. The Head of Bali’s Tourism Office highlights that the issue lies in the overconcentration of visitors in the island's southern region. This has led to traffic congestion, waste issues, and strain on local communities and culture.
To address this, the government is considering policies like tourism quotas and taxes to promote quality tourism. Additionally, encouraging visitors to explore northern, eastern, and western Bali can help create a more balanced economy and support local businesses.
With effective governance and collaboration, aligned with the Penta Helix model, Bali’s tourism can grow sustainably, preserving both local culture and the rights of its people. Managed well, tourism can flow harmoniously, benefiting all stakeholders without compromising the island’s essence.- Category
