This sculpture is created with almost 3000 ton of copper by Balinese artist, I Nyoman Nuarta with total funding about 450 million IDR. The idea of this construction has been since 1989, but the first stone layed since 1997 in Ungasan Village by I Nyoman Nuarta and Joob Ave, the minister of tourism, post and telecommunications at that time. Technically, The sculpture has been finished in August 1st 2018, but still on finishing process, since the model made by 754 bronze copper plates fused. Finally, the sculpture is perfectly done in August 4 2018. Furthermore, GWK was officially inaugurated on September 22 2018 by President, Joko Widodo.

              Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) merupakan taman budaya (cultural park) terbesar di Bali yang terletak kurang lebih 40 kilometer dari kota Denpasar, tepatnya di desa Ungasan, Bukit Jimbaran, Kuta Selatan, Badung, Bali. Luas dari GWK mencapai 240 hektar dan sering menjadi tempat berbagai pertunjukkan kesenian tradisonal (tari kecak, tari barong dll) maupun modern (Viral Fest Asia, Soundrenaline, Dreamfields dll). Taman Budaya GWK merupakan salah satu tempat wisata di Bali yang saat ini menjadi wisata favorit non pantai. Keberadaan patung Dewa Wisnu yang menunggangi Garuda (Patung GWK) dalam Taman Budaya GWK telah menjadi magnet bagi wisatawan dari mancanegara.

              Patung GWK dibuat hampir dengan 3000 ton tembaga oleh seniman asal Bali yaitu I Nyoman Nuarta dengan total biaya anggaran sekitar Rp 450 miliar. Gagasan atau ide mengenai pembangunan patung GWK sudah sejak tahun 1989, namun peletakan batu pertamanya baru dimulai pada tahun 1997 di Desa Ungasan, Bukit Jimbaran, Badung – oleh I Nyoman Nuarta dan Joob Ave menteri Pariwisata, Pos dan Telekomunikasi pada waktu itu. Secara teknis patung GWK rampung pada 1 Agustus 2018, namun masih diperlukan pengelasan sebagai ‘finishing’ agar modul-model yang terbuat dari lempeng tembaga-perunggu yang berjumlah 754 buah tersebut benar-benar menyatu. Hingga akhirnya Patung GWK sempurna diselesaikan pada 4 Agustus 2018. Selanjutnya Patung GWK diresmikan pada 22 September 2018 oleh presiden Jokowidodo. Tinggi patung tersebut mencapai 121 meter dengan lebar 64 meter. Kabarnya patung ini menjad patung tertinggi ketiga di dunia saat ini. Patung GWK menurut Nyoman Nuarta merupakan symbol dari misi penyelamatan lingkungan. Wisnu adalah inspirasi pemeliharaan alam dan harmoni, sedangkan Garuda adalah symbol pengorbanan dan kejayaan. Makna Garuda menurut Nyoman Nuarta ialah manusia yang berjanji terhadap kehidupan untuk memelihara, mengembangkan dan melindunginya. Sebab manusia yang bisa menghancurkan dan memperbaiki keadaan lingkungan.
