                    Description(s)

The book is in Dutch. Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950), descendant of an Amsterdam shipping family, was exceptionally versatile in artistic terms. Most admirers know him as a graphic artist and painter, but he was also a gifted architect, shipbuilder, writer, explorer, art collector and ethnographer. He was very prolific, leaving behind many thousands of meticulously executed drawings, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and oil paintings. Nieuwenkamp gained inspiration for his work during his travels. Before 1897 he traveled in the Netherlands and Europe. In Haarlem he became acquainted with the Arts & Crafts Movement, which has been crucial for his own artistic education. In the years that followed, he traveled to Java, Bali, Lombok, Alor and Timor, Egypt, Japan, India and China, often on long expeditions. On his travels, he visited the island of Bali six times on a long-term basis. There he cycled around with his drawing implements to record his impressions (a white artist on a bicycle had never been seen there before) and collected artefacts commissioned by the European ethnological museums. In contrast to the prevailing zeitgeist in the Netherlands, he saw the cultural achievements of the Balinese as high-quality and artistically special. In 1900 he built his beautiful living and studio ship De Zwerver, with which he sailed with his family through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. In 1905 he settled in Edam, in 1920 he left for Italy, where he initially roamed and in 1926 bought a villa in Fiesole where he lived and worked until his death. Nieuwenkamp wrote dozens of books and articles about his work and his travels. Much has been published about him in recent years, but this is the first book to provide a complete overview of his life and work.
