                        Description(s)

Todays most intriguing and evocative imagery can be found directly around us - on the street. In Bali for example, the streets reveal a unique culture of images consisting of hand-painted advertisements and letters and other graphic means of expression.During a work visit to Bali, the Swiss artist and graphic designer Donald Neuburger became so fascinated by the enormous wealth of images and typography that exist on Balis city streets that he compiled a book on it. Especially the hand-painted letters with their splendid cast shadows and serifs are so beautifully stylised that the images are more art than advertisement. The jungle of signs depicted by Neuburger pays homage to the Balinese craftsmen and gives a different perspective of the native culture of this Indonesian island popular with Western tourists.
