Description

Recycle Used Cooking Oil and Turn It into Biodiesel

Why does the innovation or project matter?

In Bali, used cooking oil is usually dumped directly into the environment and causes pollution to water bodies, groundwater and soil. Most of the oil is also reused as food ingredients. This portion is usually sold through intermediaries and local markets to small food stalls (Warung). Reusing used cooking oil as a food ingredient causes high health risks (cancer, etc.) for consumers who often come from lower social strata. The practice of selling waste oil as a food ingredient can be categorized as very critical because the origin of the oil is often not disclosed to customers and its consumption is very dangerous for health.

How do you or your team know that the innovation or project is working (or making a positive contribution)?

Used oil can be managed properly and produce products that can be reused

What has contributed to the innovation or project working?

Recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel and help reduce CO2 emissions and reduce pollution to the environment. By establishing this foundation, social empowerment of the poor is created and professional knowledge is disseminated. In addition the project raises public awareness of environmental and health issues.

What else would help the innovation or project be more successful?

Community contribution to sort and not dispose of used oil carelessly and support from the government

Is the innovation or project self-sustaining? If not, what needs to be done for that to happen?

Yes, because used oil raw materials are still available and there are still many who have not taken advantage of this management

What Balinese value does this initiative invoke?

Tri Hita Karana
