Uncontrolled overtourism is toxic to local residents. This happens because residents feel uncomfortable with the crowds of tourists, the hustle and bustle of tourist activities, and activities that disturb the tranquility of their residential environment such as traffic jams and environmental damage. Social changes can also occur, such as the loss of cultural values and traditions due to the large number of tourists who do not respect and maintain local culture.

The government must make various efforts to control overtourism, such as regulating the management of tourist attractions and their supporting infrastructure. According to Utami, et al. The government can supervise the number of tourists entering a tourist spot, so that it is not too crowded and does not cause negative impacts on the environment and the quality of life of the local population. This step is an effort to improve the quality of tourism, namely by creating more sustainable tourism and providing benefits to the local population.
