- pods are flat and thin, about 10 cm. long. C. surinamensis, aka C. haematocephala, is less common and is used primarily as a decorative plant
- There are two species of calliandra in Bali, neither of them native. C. calothyrsus has been widely planted to control erosion on slopes, but is also useful as firewood and improve soils. It is a small tree, up to 6 m. high, with bipinnate leaves and extremely small leaflets. Flowers are showy, with tufts of numerous long, red stamens
- stamens in the ball shaped inflorescence are white below, red on top.
