Mark Hobart is Emeritus Professor of Critical Media and Cultural Studies in the Centre for Media Studies, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Originally trained as an anthropologist, he studied at Cambridge, Leiden and SOAS. He has specialized in South East Asia with particular reference to Indonesia and has conducted over eight years’ field research in Bali and Java. After three years’ fieldwork on Balinese village society, his work expanded to include indigenous philosophy in action. Since the late nineteen eighties he has engaged in research on theatre and the rise of the mass media as reflexive social commentary, which involved intensive ethnographic research on audiences and television production in Bali and Yogyakarta. He also established one of the world’s largest archives of television materials on Balinese culture. His current research is on cultural styles of argument and rhetoric in different Indonesian societies.
