Artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres (1880–1958) arrived in Bali in 1932, and married the beautiful Legong dancer Ni Polok three years later, when she was just 15. They lived in this compound back when Sanur was still a quiet fishing village. After the artist’s death, Ni Polok lived in the house until she died in 1985. Despite security (some of Le Mayeur's paintings have sold for US$150,000) and conservation problems, almost 90 of Le Mayeur's paintings are displayed.

The house is an interesting example of Balinese-style architecture – notice the beautifully carved window shutters that recount the story of Rama and Sita from the Ramayana. The museum has a naturalistic Balinese interior of woven fibres. Some of Le Mayeur’s early works are impressionist paintings from his travels in Africa, India, the Mediterranean and the South Pacific. Paintings from his early period in Bali are romantic depictions of daily life and beautiful Balinese women – often Ni Polok. The works from the 1950s are in much better condition, displaying the vibrant colours that later became popular with young Balinese artists. Look for the haunting black-and-white photos of Ni Polok.

Kembali lagi memberi refrensi tentang permuseuman di Bali, kini akan membahas sekilas tentang Museum Le Mayeur. Museum yang memiliki keunikan tersendiri karena lebih bercita rasa rumah tempat tinggal namun menyimpan hasil seni yang indah.

Museum ini sebenernya tempat tinggal dari pelukis yang bernama Adrien Jaen Le Mayure. Siapa dia? Le Mayeur adalah pelukis yang berasal dari Bruxelles Belgia yang datang ke Bali pada tahun 1932. Beragam lukisan mulai dari kehidupan sang istri Ni Pollok hingga keindahan alam Sanur terekam dalam lukisan.

Lukisan tertua di Museum Le Mayeur tercatat pada tahun 1921 dan termuda adalah satu tahun sebelum Le Mayeur meninggal yakni 1957. Jumlah lukisannya semasa hidup tercatat sebanyak 88 buah. Di museum ini tersebut terdapat 6 ruangan yang diantaranya ruang studio tempat melukis, ruang untuk tamu yang ingin melihat lukisan, ruang untuk berkumpul keluarga, ruang untuk tempat istirahat (kamar tidur), ruang untuk Ni Polok merias diri beserta kamar mandi, ruang untuk menyiapkan sesajian dan menyimpan alat – alat upacara.

Selain hal tersebut, museum ini terletak di pinggir pantai Sanur Denpasar. Dari pantai ini kita dapat menikmati matahari terbit dan hiruk pikuk orang-orang yang akan menyebrang dari pulau Bali ke Nusa Penida atau Nusa Lembongan. Pantai dengan pasir putih ini akan cukup mudah ditemukan lokasinya sehingga alasan untuk tidak mampir ke museum jelas tidak ada salahnya.

Museum Le Mayeur buka setiap hari kecuali Jumat, pukul 08.30 sampai 12.30 WITA, dan hari libur resmi tutup. Jadi silahkan berkunjung ke museum sambil menikmati pemandangan pantai Sanur.
