BASAbali/BASAibu Wiki is a community-developed digital platform whose primary purpose is to provide a locally-developed, inviting space for the community to speak out about civic issues in a way that is meaningful to the community and a place for policymakers to listen, solicit and respond to those ideas. BASAbali Wiki started out as a community-developed multimedia dictionary based on the unpublished work of Fred Eiseman. When the community saw the power of the BASAbali dictionary wiki, they suggested that we morph the wiki into a platform where artists, especially those only known in their villages, could be promoted to the larger world. In response, we added a 'virtual library' section to the wiki which ultimately became 'Community Spaces', a place where millennials and others can speak out about civic issues -- in their own language, via videos, audio, poetry, prose, photos or other formats -- on a platform that the community itself is co-creating.

Any content cited from this wiki must acknowledge the authors (where authors are specified), BASAbali/BASAibu Wiki and also include a link to the article in which the content is found.

We thank you all of the users, sponsors and donors for your support. Without the thousands of people who have contributed to and continue to contribute to, edit, and use this wiki, it would not continue to be the useful resource it has evolved into. We'd especially like to thank Fondation Botnar for their multiyear support to deepen the Balinese cultural wiki in Bali and to replicate in Makassar, South Sulewesi as BASAsulsel Wiki under a larger BASAibu Wiki umbrella.

-The wiki was originally designed by Andru Vallance of TinyMighty and modified by Yaron Koren of Wiki Works.  Alexey Klimovich has now taken the wiki to a new level of functionality.   Purnawan Heyun Kadek, Ika Inggas, Kadek Hemawan, and Luciana Ferrero, Andru Vallance, Ayu Mandala and Bale Banjar USA helped make Balinese available as a wiki language which allowed BASAbali — and the public — to be able to use Balinese for this and other wikis.

-The first contribution to the BASAbali wiki was Fred Eiseman’s unpublished Balinese-English dictionary, with many thanks to Eiseman’s assistant, Linud, and Eiseman’s estate for donating the dictionary.  Brandon Yu, Toni Pollard, Robin Tatu, Jack Blaylock, Megan Harris, Margaret Cole, Wayan Mastriyana, Wulan Dari, Lucy McGilligan, John Kandjistent, Adrian Groom helped to edit this work and Prof. John Wolff and Adrian Vickers provided lexicographic assistance.   We benefited greatly from the SEAlang Library as well.

The wiki now has over 11,000 entries with thousands of videos, photographs, articles and short stories entered by the over a quarter of a million people. In February 2015, BASAbali Wiki was named Semantic Media of the Month and it has been featured in Tempo Magazine, The Jakarta Post, Voice of America and others. Local artists, poets, songwriters, village heads and other local leaders encourage people to post to the wiki and a team of professional linguists and editors ensures the wiki’s integrity.
